During General Conference, Laura hurt her foot. When she went up the stairs to get a blanket she slipped on the stairs and her foot turned and she her "popping" and "crunching" sounds...not good. The pain took Laura's breath away and she had to sit there and compose herself. After a few moments of deep breaths she Knew she did something to her foot. Laura went and got an ice pack and iced her foot during the whole session of conference. The kids were so good to her - they even gave her a pedicure! Aparri painted one foot and Preston painted another. Laura let them express their creative juices and paint away...why not?
After conference was over, Laura decided to wear tennis shoes all day, which helped keep her foot supported. With the shoes and the help of a little tylenol - she was able to finish the day strong. As Laura went to bed, she was excited and thought "maybe I didn't hurt myself as bad as I thought I did, my foot feels pretty good, Sure it hurt a little bit all day, but I managed."
And off to bed she went....
Laura woke up to excruciating pain. As Laura made herself to the bathroom, she couldn't put any weight on her foot, so she had to crawl to the toilet to pee.... crawling and then trying to hoist yourself on the toilet without one foot...was not easy business especially when you had to potty. But Laura was able to accomplish that task, now for the next... Laura needed to go downstairs to get more Tylenol and ice...as she made her way to the stairs, she quickly realized she was going to have to crawl the whole way down and around and back up. Laura couldn't move, touch, or use her foot at all. At this point, Laura knew she had hurt herself a whole lot more than she initially thought. Laura feels like she has a pretty high pain tolerance, so when she is hurting this bad...its bad. It took some time, but she made it to the kitchen got her HIGH strength after birth tylenol, and some ice and headed back up. Well, Laura got to the front room and had to stop, the pain was so great she needed a rest. In this moment of pain and desperation, Laura said a prayer. She prayed for help and strength, she prayed to be able to take care of her kids - she was barely able to crawl around, how could she take care of 5 kids with Clay gone on a business trip and it is now spring break...so 5 kids all day long, itching to have fun. Laura cried and prayed and then slowly crawled her way back up the stairs to her bedroom. IT was a LONG night. Becky was working graveyard shift, so Laura texted her and told her what happened. Becky said she needed to go to the ER. But Laura couldn't walk - so someone would need to come to the house, Laura would have to crawl down to let them in, they would have to drive Laura and then carry her into the hospital. That didn't sound like a fun plan, so Laura decided to wait until morning. Somewhere around 4:30 or 5:00 am Laura fell back
asleep for a few hours. At 7am she decided to try and get out of bed. Laura was amazed. She could put pressure on her foot. It was tender, but she could walk. Laura knew this was a miracle especially after the night she had endured. Becky convinced her she needed to go in to the ER and get it checked out anyway. Since Laura could walk on her foot, she knew that she could also drive herself. So she woke up CJ to babysit and off to the ER she went. The hospital was empty so they got her right in.
As the doctor came in to examine Laura's hurt foot, Laura noticed her toes...and the glorious pedicure. Oh my goodness. What a beautiful bright mixture of color! After Laura shook off the initial embarrassment she lovingly thought of her kids who had given her that glorious pedicure and the care they had given her the day before and smiled. The doctor ordered an xray and we waited for answers. Becky was off work now and off to a dentist appointment, but she wanted to be kept in the loop as to the results. As the doctor went over the results of the xray, in walks Jory Bulkley - a friend from the ward, who is an ER doctor. He kicked the other doctor out and proceeded to take on Laura as a patient. As he pushed, twisted and pulled on her foot - there was little pain, but almost none. It was a miracle. Jory even said that with the amount of pain Laura was in the night before, she should be in more pain now, but she wasn't Jory instructed Laura to ice and wrap it for a few days to help the inflammation go down. Then when the swelling went down, she was to heat treat it for healing. As Laura went home full of gratitude, she pulled into the driveway and looked into her rearview mirror...and there was Becky walking up her driveway...what?? That's when Laura lost it and started to cry. "I thought you had a dentist appointment?" Nope. Becky had made it up because she was driving to Spokane to surprise and help out her invalid of a sister! What an act of love and service! Drive 2.5 hours after working all night. Oh, I love you Becky.
Becky stayed all day and helped Laura take care of kids. Day one of spring break wasn't a bust, thanks to this amazing Aunt! We went to the croc center in Coeur D'Alene where we swam, the kids did a rock wall and played games, When Clay made it home he gave Becky a Hawaiian pineapple for taking care of his wife in his absence! Thank you Becky. We will never forget your love and selfless sacrifice.
Update: When Laura hurt her foot, she was training for 2 upcoming runs...the terrain race and the spartan. Now her running was on hold...but she could walk! 2 weeks later, Laura was walking and running without a brace . Over the course of the next few weeks, Laura healed and was able to run both of her races without pain and was completely healed! Laura knew this was a miracle and blessing from Heavenly Father. He had answered her prayer and plea for help in the middle of the night.
